Just before I dig deeper, would you expect these resources to work fine with files ending in *.sql.bz2 or *.sql.gz?

Thanks!

I think this is a step in the direction of solving this, should we desire:
libarchive/libarchive#586

Any thoughts? I'm trying to use this to decompress sql files compressed by the backup gem cookbook:
https://github.com/damm/backup
https://github.com/X0nic/chef-database_restore/blob/master/providers/from_file.rb#L42-L46

the libarchive_file resource currently throws errors similar to this:

irb(main):001:0> Archive::Reader.open_filename('confluence-test-confluence/databases/PostgreSQL.sql.gz')
Archive::Error: Unrecognized archive format
