Motivated by this error #1626

We can do it using the file command

$ file gleam
gleam: Mach-O 64-bit executable x86_64

I had a go at this in PR #3897.

Hope it's OK that I didn't mention it here first? Is seems clear what and how it is supposed to be done and the issue is quite old, so the chances for anyone else going for it were slim. ✌️
