This PR fixes #11. I tested it with each of the examples listed in the README and believe I am reproducing the expected behavior, plus the expected behavior from #11.

The code isn't pretty but we wouldn't be using Vimscript if we had any
beauty standards.

Thanks! Gross :) but passes all the tests, including a new one I had on a branch here from ages ago.

Quite happy to see this long-standing issue disappear.
